Front End Squeaking

The lower end of the Spax dampers has been known to squeak, although the noise is sometimes hard to pinpoint.  To check, pack the area where the lower bolt goes through the damper with grease.  If the noise disappears, that's the problem.

The Spax damper uses a spherical bearing at the bottom end, retained by circlips on both sides.  If the clearance is noticeable, replace the bearing.  There are two different bearings:

  • 7/8" OD: Torrington 5SF8 or equivalent
  • 26mm (1.023"): SKF GE15C (This bearing is sleeved to reduce the ID from 15mm to 1/2".)

Grease at regular intervals.
