tables are based on a 26" rear
tire diameter.

There
is no such thing as an
ideal transmission/differential ratio combination. But - some
pairing will work better
than others for your conditions. Smaller engines require a
shorter first gear (under 8 mph/1000rpm) while more cubic inches might
allow 10 mph/1000rpm to be comfortable. If you like
comfortable cruising, most people like to have a top gear that keeps
the engine rpm below about 2300 rpm at a typical highway speed, but
some have a higher tolerance for noise than others. |

| The taller
top-gear combinations don't have very impressive
accelleration. A downshift is necessary for vigorous passing,

that's half the fun of driving, isn't it?
